In Loving Memory of Bronte...

Bronte was named after the Bronte sisters, three strong women who were much ahead of their time: Anne, Charlotte and Emily, kind of called her ACE sometimes, but Bronte really stuck. She was found at a grade school in Cuyahoga Falls in the dead of winter during a snow storm. Someone hoped one of the school children would take her home. She was a little girl, only about 35 pounds full grown, part beagle, part sheltie and some aussie) with long curly brown/black hair. She knew what she wanted and got it. She wanted Bob to adopt her and he did.

When he let another dog sleep in bed with him (we separated out foster dogs and this one was new and we did not know if there might be a contagion issue), she kindly went into the bed, after the dog was long gone, and proceeded to pee profusely from one end to the other. It was her bed, not the little Irish setter who spent two nights. He was her person even though he had gambled on a short flirtation with a cutie. When Bob moved out to get married, he had new responsibilities and new children and children had not always been her strong suit. Actually Bronte always wanted to come first, but in a wonderful way.

Bronte might have been a little girl but she was the boss of the house for a long time and new fosters had to reckon with her. She was an alpha who knew what she wanted. She was inventive and creative…. climbed a fir tree’s branches to get up and over a six foot wooden fence to run around the neighborhood and then show up on the front porch. She was really smart.

And then she got older…… Bronte went through diabetes and twice daily shots at age seven and then at twelve there was the cancer surgery and chemo. In October of 2012 the vet said her kidneys were failing. She lived on IV fluids and boiled chicken and all her favorites until February 7, 2012 when she went to the Rainbow Bridge at age 14. She loved the back yard and sunning herself. She loved sleeping next to me and she loved giving me a kiss and I loved it too. I loved her and I still love her.

All my dogs have theme songs; her song is below:

Bronte’s Song
I am woman, hear me Bark
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' paws across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
I am wonderful
I am Bronte!
